ANNIVERSARY MONTE 100 CLASSIQUE Jedburgh - 30 January
Report & photos by Jim Paterson

Early
arrivals Peter Barker/Christa Percival in their 1960 Triumph Herald
Coupé, with John and Jackie Clayton with green 1976 Ford
Escort RS2000, and 1983 VW Golf GTi of Gordon Tulley and Ko
Kaming.
A
team from CCHMSC manned the Jedburgh control point to clock in the
Historique and Classique cars as they headed for Hull and the ferry to
Rotterdam on Friday 30th January.
We setup our cotrol point in the
car park just off the A68 in the shadow of the famous Jedburgh Abbey ruin. Ralph Forbes, John
Stuart and myself from the club committee were assisted by Geoff
Atkinson a keen classic car enthusiast and club member Willie Macleod,
also a keen classic car supporter. Jean-Luc Cartwright of Maple House
Classic Cars LTD www.maplehouseclassics.com had
arrived with a small team of mechanics and his van full of bits and
bobs and lots of tools, jacks etc, to lend a hand should anyone require
some TLC when they arrived. Jim and Nikki Wilson would arrive
later with their trailer, providing support for a number of cars over
the whole route to Monte Carlo.
John Stuart welcoomed the crews at the arrival
control, signing their time cards to prove their visit. Some would park
up and take the option of breakfast / bacon roll and coffee from
the Abbey Bridge Coffee House and Pizzeria next to the car park.

More
crews arrived, some catching up after fighting morning rush hour
traffic on the Edinburgh Bypass, including Classique
organiser Douglas and June Anderson, ensuring crews left enough
time to board the ferry at Hull in time. Douglas and June were
planning some 'me time' after the event touring around France.

Some
real 'Old Timers' were in the group passing through Jedburgh.
Sandy McEwan /Alan Stark drove their 1940 Ford Fordor
deluxe, which has seen challenges on the Morocco Rally where it
regularly suffered overheating crosing the Sahara desert. Not a problem
today as getting up to temperature in the frosty Scottish weather was
their main challenge. Meanwhile James Mann and Richard Watton were
braving the weather in their 1934 Lagonda, sporting a hood but no
sidescreens, allowing the wind in the hair experience whether wanted or
not!

Other club members passing through were Duncan Massie
and committee member Ron Adam in a recently acquired 1980 MGB/GT
which was looking good after a recent refurb and service. Member Mike
Helm teamed up with Andrew Flexney in Mike's 1959 Triumph TR3. Mike and
Andrew are also active members of Club Triumph, and usually joins
CCHMSC club events in his Triumph TR6. Like the Lagonda the TR3 can be
a bit draughty, though he did sport sidescreens for this trip |

Ranald White teamed up with wife Marjorie in his 1964 Rover P6.
This car and crew have made a few trips on past Monte events as
wells as trips around Scotland, including the Outer Hebrides.
Screeching from the fanbelt started, but is a common issue Ranald told
me. Something to do with outsize alternator to power the extra lights
putting extra load o nthe belt. Jim Wilson arrived to assist. Luckily
Ranald carries several spares on board.
Bill
and Ben Jiggins in their 1972 MGB Roadster must be immune to
scottish weather, being determined to do the whole route top
down!! A pre-cursor for the alpine sections in France perhaps.
Hylton Reid and Melvyn Harris whilst opting for an 1954 Austin A30,
something with a roof, are determined the 803cc A series engine will
drag the little car over the alps. Good luck to them both.
Twin Alfa's Depart

Our
1965 Alfa Romeo Giulia crewed by Nigel and Elannah Griffiths departed
with 1975 Alfa Romeo GT1600 of Rudy Micallef and Susan Hayes on
their way south toward Yorkshire.

Chumming them were the Imp twins of John Ross & Paul Conroy in
their 1965 Singer Chamois Mk1 following 1964 Mk1 Imp of
Patrick McGorty and Jim McGurk.
You can see more from Jim Wilson on his facebook feed
with
many photos of the crews and a few with Jim in his usual position, on
his back underneath a car on ramps repairing something!
