 January 2013

Ed's Ramblings

Happy New Year to all our readers  and hoping you had a great Christmas. We did at the end of year High Tea meal in Perth.

Things really gearing up for the Glasgow Monte Carlo Historique Start. A great  day of activities is planned, as Douglas reports on in this newsletter.

My letter opener is busy right now opening the Heritage Run entries, but there are still places available.

Douglas and the team are booking all the arrangements for the Ecosse to Monaco Run so if you want to join the crews then put that entry in the post soonest. Email entry secretary (me, address below) if you want to join the party but having problems getting the entry in by the cut-off date.

Dave Spence has designed the route to Monaco, with Monte veteran Ralph Forbes, who has successfully completed several Monte's providing some exciting  suggestions to make the trip something you will remember for a long time.

If Monaco is a bit too far then join in on one of the UK Heritage Runs. You get to cross the start ramp at the People's Palace right after the main Monte competitors depart. Make sure you bring a friend to capture a photo as you depart. Definitely one for the album.

Still looking for a classic car to bring along. Then check out the link to the 'shed collection'. Great cars, with rallying provenance on offer, any one which would not be out of place on the Monaco Heritage Run.

All prepared? Don't forget tickets for the pre-start Gala Dinner on the Friday evening, the 25th.

Craig Lowndes, Australian Touring Car Champion will be the speaker and will be driving the fantastic 1953 Holden on the main Monte Carlo Historique, celebrating the cars 60th anniversary. Some great stories to be heard I bet.

Good news too from Douglas. His new Vitesse is complete, and with MoT secured is ready for the Ecosse to Monaco Run. Now all we need is a bit of snow over the next couple of weeks so that the  'shakedown'  will be just like in the Alps.

Finally. All great events have good marshalling, and this one needs lots of them to ensure the smooth running of the departure. With an anticipated 15000 spectators the marshals will be essential to making sure the competitors and crews get away on schedule. If you can help please drop our chief marshal, Brian Telfer and email with your details. Brian will welcome you and find plenty to keep you busy.

Our friend Alan Duncan has been organising entries for the Monte Show in Buchanan Street which promises spectators a wide range of classic cars in addition to the Monte and Heritage entries. If you would like to bring your classic along drop Alan an email

The calendar of 2013 club events is now on the website so check them out. Working with other clubs we can promote a wide range of exciting events for all classic owners be it a tour or something more competitive.

Whatever you decide to do it will always be good fun with your club .

Enjoy all the fine 'fettling' going on in the garage and I lok forward to seeing you out in the car at some point later this year.

Christmas High Tea - 9 December

It seems to pass so quickly, but a great crowd got together during December for the annual High Tea which rounds off the year's activities and allows a chat about the next year's events.

The weather may have been cold but the snow of earlier in the week had gone and the sun shone for the journey to Perth. Twentythree of us sat down to a great selection of main courses followed by the traditional scones, and this year cream meringues. Christmas crackers brought the festive feeling as we talked about the years adventures and what is planned for 2013.

Monte Carlo Rally Glasgow Start -
Press Launch - 20 December
The world's Press and Television turned out to Glasgow's People's Palace on Thursday 20th December 2012 and were greeted with typical Monte Carlo Rally, weather, wet, windy, and cold. Not quite cold enough for snow but not far away. Douglas Anderson of CCHMSC, Tommy Bryce, Monte entrant in the 1954 event, Jimmy McRae of world rallying fame, and Scott Taylor from the Glasgow marketing bureau gave the press an insight for the 2013 Glasgow start event. Forthcoming Events

Monte 2013 Glasgow Start  -  26 January
Douglas Anderson

It’s only 3 weeks to go before the Start of the Rallye Monte Carlo Historique and all the preparations for the event are going well.  Here is the latest news with a reminder of the range of Heritage Runs still available for you to entry.  There are still some places left on all the Runs, so dust off the Classic.  I have arranged for good weather for that weekend.

Media Coverage

Our Press Officer, Kenneth Steven, is keeping the newspapers, TV and Radio up to date with the arrangements for the Start.  You may have seen some of the coverage in the papers and TV over the past few weeks.  This Sunday, 6 January, there will be a two-page feature in the Scotland on Sunday covering some of the cars, entrants and history of the Rallye.  Order your copies now from your newsagent.

Gala Dinner

On Friday 25 January 2013 there will be a Gala Dinner at the Blythswood Square Hotel, in the Monte Carlo room.  The guests of honour will be the Australian Team with the speaker being the Australian Touring Car Champion, Craig Lowndes.  Tickets are £35 each, including a pre-dinner drinks reception.  Dress Code is ‘Black Tie Optional’.  Contact me on 01382 731755 or email dglanderson1@yahoo.co.uk if you would like tickets.

Monte Show

On Saturday 26 January 2013, starting from 10am the Rallye will take over Buchanan Street, Glasgow.  The ‘Monte’ cars and the Heritage Run cars will be on show to the public.  The cars will begin to leave Buchanan Street to make their way to the Start venue at Glasgow Green from 12noon.

Glasgow Green

The Start Ramp will be situated near the People’s Palace at Glasgow Green.  We are fortunate to have once more secured the services of our Monte commentator, David Ross from Aberdeen and are looking forward to hearing his knowledgeable and entertaining commentary.  There will also be music, the Cupcake Girls and a marching band to keep everybody entertained before the Start time of 2pm.

Heritage Runs

Ecosse – Monaco Heritage Run – there are still places available, but the closing date is very soon as hotels need to be confirmed and ferries booked.

Run to the Moor – From the Start Ramp to the Olde Bell Inn, Barnby Moor, Yorkshire which is a Passage Control for the Historique Cars.  A warm welcome is always given by the Yorkshire enthusiasts.

Run to the Border – Again starting from the Ramp this year the Run will finish at the Auldgarth Inn, Dumfriesshire.  This Traditional Inn is on the main road to Dumfries and they are looking forward to welcoming Heritage Run teams.

Run to the Loch – This is a return to the original Heritage Run finish venue at Luss.  Once again starting from the Ramp with a short drive up to Luss.  This is ideal for those who don’t want to drive too far in their Classic or those whose final destination is north of Glasgow.

Time to get your entry in quickly to Jim Paterson -
jim.paterson@btinternet.com soonest to secure your place in this great event.

Marshals Wanted

As usual we
will be looking for experienced marshals to assist with the movement of cars at the various venues – scrutineering, Buchanan Street and Glasgow Green.  If you are interested please contact the Chief Marshal Brian Telfer  briandtelfer@hotmail.co.uk
The team are looking forward to seeing you all on Saturday 26 January 2013.  You are sure to have a fantastic day out.

Triumph Ready
to go

"Douglas' new Triumph Vitesse rally car now has an MOT and is ready for its shake-down tests before it goes into the foyer of the Blythswood Square Hotel next week.  Jim Wilson, of A Wilson and Sons, has done a fantastic job to prepare the car for the Monte.  The car is an evolution of the Works Rally Vitesse.  It is light weight and has a bhp of around 140, with brakes and suspension all uprated to cope with the extra power."
Aussies about to Land
As you read this newsletter the Australian team cars will be landing after their oversea journey from the east coast of Australia. Two Holdens will line up at the start, retracing the 1953 entry, 60 years later. with Richard Davison, Craig Lowndes and Gary Poole. You can read all about their project on http://www.facebook.com/MonteCarloProject
