Trans Alpina & 5eme Nuit du
Mentonnais
4-11 October
Latest - 7th August
Almost ten crews have confirmed their place for the tour to Menton and Monte
Carlo. This leaves only one or two places left, so now is the time to act if
you are interested, but have yet to tell Jim Paterson or Douglas Anderson
that you are committed. Preparations are
almost complete for the Trans Alpina, with entries to date having been
supplied with ferry crossing and hotel accommodation options. Basically
the tour is a week long car tour to Monte Carlo
following in the tracks of the 1964 Monte Carlo Rally,
which was won that year by Paddy Hopkirk and Henry Liddon in a Mini Cooper S. It starts in the famous cathedral town of Reims,
leaving entrants to make their own cross channel arrangements, depending on
where they live.
The
suggested route will take us through France to the
Maritime Alps, then down to the warm Mediterranean, in
a leisurely four days to reach Monte Carlo from Reims.
The overnight halts will be at Mulhouse, Aix-le-Bains,
and Gap. This averages out at just over 200 miles a
day.
After a
rest day on Friday 9th, entrants can take part in the
5eme Nuit du Mentonnais on Saturday 10th. This event, organised by
Automobile Club Menton, is a 3 stage tour of the
famous mountain passes or ‘cols’ some of which were
used in the night circuit of the Monte Carlo Rallies
of the 50’s and 60’s.
Here is last year’s programme, to give you a flavour
of what may be in store.
-
1st stage:
117 km
Menton, Col du Castillon, Sospel, Col du Bescavo,
Olivetta San Michele, Breil, Tende. 30 minute stop and
re-group. Col de Tende (old road), Col de Brouis,
Sospel.
-
2nd stage:
91 km
Sospel, Col de Braus, Col de L’Ablé, col de l’Orme
Lucéram, Col Saint Roch, Col de Porte Loda Lantosque,
La Bollène Vésubie, Col du Turini, Sospel.
-
3rd stage:
22 km

The Nuit
du Mentonnais concludes the suggested tour. It should be a great adventure and a wonderful
motoring holiday.
