Autoecosse Cup - 4th & 5th November 2006

Paul McCulla in his TVR3000M and navigator Michael Beattie both from Northern Ireland won the Autoecosse Cup with a class blistering performance on the tests, and one of only two to clean sheet the night navigational. Fellow Irishmen Noel Cochrane in his nimbler MG Midget with co-driver Lloyd Cochrane pipped the TVR crew on several tests, especially when McCulla kissed two cones at the Lecht, but the TVR grunt won the day.

Jim Hendry on the stops with Graeme CouserJim Hendry in his red Triumph TR3 was guided round the cones by Graeme Couser to secure second overall place for the Autoecosse Cup and first in their class. The TR as usual rose to the enthusiastic driving of Jim which had Graeme on the bump stops on a few occasions as the tail buried itself low on the handbrake turns. Stuart Bankier in his mighty Volvo Amazon with Donald Alexander were up against Jim but still managed to keep within a few seconds of the TR3 team, matching their time on one of the tests. Stuart is not frightened to heave the leviathan into a tight turn.

Bob and John Shearer keeping the revs upIn the small engined class of the Autoecosse Cup, Bob and John Shearer from HCC in their Hillman Imp took the prize. Bob's technique was to keep it as smooth as possible so that the pitifully small engine kept in what power band there was!! It was enough to keep the superbly presented Renault 8 of Liz Swan and Suzanne Mitchell, recently seen on the Trans Scottish at bay, as well as Joe Norman and Mike Kirk in their Austin Mini.

Archie and Richard Simmonds making a blur of the conesArchie and Richard Simmonds in their MG Midget from Duns won The Angus Shield. Eight entries were whittled down to four finishers as mechanical problems beset some of the runners. The Simmonds set most of the fastest times on the tests, faster even than the autotest kings from Northern Ireland, putting them over 200 points clear of the second place Philip and David Barnett's burbling V8 powered Triumph TR8.
The Barnett family were out in force with Gareth and Innes sporting a Porsche 911, but the TR8 crew took top family honours by a mere 20 points by the end of the event.

Richard Bartniczek & Donald Johnstone on way to Edzell TrophyThe moderns competed for the Edzell Trophy and Richard Bartniczek piloted his Peugeot 106 Rallye to victory with Donald Johnstone, and was the other team to clean sheet the night navigational. They narrowly kept ahead of another Volvo, this time in the shape of a 2 litre 360 driven by Newcastle lads Graeme Jobson, and navigated by Max Hall (Mad Max). Graeme and Max did pick up the class prize for their valiant efforts.

Click to visit website, and enjoy a weekend in Switzerland. The prize for farthest travelled had of course to go to Monsieur's Potterat and Romaglnoli from Switzerland in a Ford Ka. Without any idea of navigational rallying they managed, after a quick "teach in", to complete the evening route without being last to come in. The pair invite all of us to their winter event in January.

A big thanks to Highland Car Club for the evening, and aptly named "Guy Fawkes" navigational. The 45 mile run was a great finish to the first day and enjoyed by all who entered.

The weather was kind to the 22 starters of the Autoecosse Cup rally which started from the Panmure Arms Hotel in Edzell on Saturday 4th November. A good crowd turned out for the official flag start by the depute Provost.
Competitors from Northern Ireland, England, Scotland and Switzerland challenged the two day event which included a tour around some of Scotland's finest roads, passing no less than 21 tests and including a navigational event on the evening of the 4th, organised  by Highland Car Club. The old favourites at Alford, and the Durris hill climb were included and gravel tests at the Lecht.
The overnight venue hospitality was provided by the staff at the Grant Arms Hotel in Grantown on Spey as used by the Scottish Rally for their Rally HQ in the sixties.
Only one test at the top of a very exposed Cairngorm had to be cancelled as high winds kept blowing the cones away!!!
Sunday took us back to Edzell, again under the autumn sunshine, taking in some of the Saturday tests including a great series at Alford, home of the Grampian Museum, to make up for the lost Cairngorm venue.
Three trophies were challenged, the Autoecosse Cup, the Edzell Trophy and the Angus Shield.
